Blood Donors Needed After Winter Storms

Posted: Updated:

From United Blood Services:

Due winter storms impacting much of the region, United Blood Services is requesting help from the community to donate blood in the coming days to ensure a stable blood supply.

Recent winter storms have forced several blood drives to cancel and local blood centers to close across the region which impacts the units of blood available to patients. United Blood Services requests that the public volunteer to donate whether they have given before or are trying it for the first time.

According to Connie Morris, Regional Center Director, United Blood Services, "The number of storms we've had across the region has affected how many of our regular blood donors can venture out to give. We are counting on the community right now to donate blood to ensure that we have enough available for patients. The need for blood doesn't stop for a storm so it is vitally important that we re-build our supply."

United Blood Services assures the public that hospital blood needs have been and continue to be met. But it is important to build up the local supply in anticipation of any emergencies or unforeseen usage in the near future.

To make an appointment please contact United Blood Services at 800-917-4929 or go to www.unitedbloodservices.org.

Volunteer blood donors must be 16 years old or older (16 year olds must have a signed permission form which is available on the website or at the blood drive), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.
