More Sandbags Ready for Fargo If Needed

Posted: Updated:

Fargo officials say the sandbags from Sandbag Central will more than cover their flood fight if the Red River crests around 38 feet.

If that number goes higher, a second wave of sandbags is also being prepared.

Five-hundred fifty thousand bags will be stored at three locations: Sandbag Central, the landfill and at the old Savers location.

Only 180,000 will be needed to dike to cover a 38-foot crest, but the city is already thinking ahead.

There is another site across from landfill that is holding an extra supply of 750,000 bags from the 2011 flood.

They are sitting outside, but so far that has not been a problem. Fargo Enterprise Director Bruce Grubb says, "Some of the top layer of bags was frozen, but once you got through that, it's surprising there weren't many frozen bags at all."

Grubb says it is hard to judge, but having to guess, he says only about 75,000 are frozen.

If the city does have to dike to the next phase at 42.5 feet, only 250,000 of the extra bags would be needed on top of the 550,000 made this year for the city.

If the city needs more than that, Grubb says, "That's our second phase of sandbag deployment so we're quite confident those bags will be thawed out."

Though, to begin talking about deployment in general is jumping ahead.

"We don't even have a deterministic forecast yet. In other words, the river hasn't even started flowing so we're quite certain we won't be deploying those bags next week," says Grubb.

If there is a need for more sandbags, Fargo is prepared to take any frozen bags inside to thaw.
