Spring Flood Could Affect the Fargo Marathon

Posted: Updated:

This spring's flood could force runners to take a different route during this year's Fargo Marathon.

Race director, Mark Knutson says he's looking at adding a different route, just in case.

Knutson says a lot of factors play into the potential changes. The crest isn't expected for a few more weeks, it's not known how long the river will stay high and then there is significant clean up.

Mark Knutson/Fargo Marathon Director: "I'm hopeful and I believe in our city leaders that this flood is not going to demolish the city. But, there are couple of spots on our route that are under water at 23 feet."

The crest is expected to be well over 30 feet, so that could affect the race route -- depending on the timing of it.

Knutson says the double loop that was used in the past because of flooding will not be done this year.

Marathon events run May 16th - 18th.

You can still sign up for events. There are several races including a youth run, 5k, 10k, half marathon and full marathon.
