$80 Million Expansion for Essentia Health - Valley News Live - KVLY/KXJB - Fargo/Grand Forks

$80 Million Expansion for Essentia Health

Posted: Updated:

A Fargo Hospital is getting ready for an $80 million dollar expansion. The Essentia Health project involves a new wing with a four-story tower for the current 32nd Avenue location.  An additional support services building will be located south and west of the hospital.

Hospital leaders say their 105-bed facility operates at a high capacity every day, and that more patients are demanding services.

"We've invested $50 million quietly in this region building our infrastructure and what has resulted from that is that we have hit our cap of what this campus can support," says Greg Glasner, Chief Medical Officer for Essentia Health. "Our 85 percent occupancy at midnight generally means 100+ percent occupancy during the day, everyday."

Construction crews will get started on the first phase of the projects in April.

Phase 1
In the first phase, Essentia will build a 105,000-square-foot hospital tower with four stories and a basement.  Design work will be finalized this spring, and the footings and foundation go into the ground this summer.  The tower will include new high-tech suites for imaging, endoscopy, interventional radiology and heart catheterization procedures.  Patient beds will initially increase by 28, with the capacity for total hospital beds to more than double in the future.  The new tower is slated for completion in January 2015.

Also this spring, construction will begin on a new support services building that will serve as a regional supply distribution center and provide office space for departments such as coding and business services.  The 25,000-square-foot building will be located south of 32nd Avenue just west of I-29 on land that Essentia already owns.

Two new surface parking lots will be built on the 32nd Avenue campus, creating about 400 new spaces by this fall.

Finally, Essentia's South University Clinic is beginning a major renovation, which will allow several departments to expand.  This will return the entire facility to clinic space and move support staff off-site.

Phase 2
In January 2014, construction will begin on another building on the 32nd Avenue campus.  This two-story, 20,000-square-foot facility will offer specialty clinic space, which will be needed as Essentia continues to add physicians and other providers.  Decisions about which departments will move to this location haven't been finalized.  This building is scheduled for completion in March 2015.

Phase 3
The third phase begins in December 2014, with the expansion of the hospital's current Emergency Department, operating rooms and imaging services.  This project will expand the hospital's footprint and allow the Emergency Department to grow from 13 treatment rooms to 26. This work is expected to extend to early 2016.
