Production of One Million Sandbags Begins

Posted: Updated:

It's a place Fargo has become familiar with over the years, "Sandbag Central," and it's now open once again as Fargo and Cass County gear up to make 1,000,000 sandbags.

Three spider machines, 7,500 tons of sand, and 5,000 pallets to hold bags have taken over the Division of Solid Waste building located at 2301 8th Ave. North, in Fargo. The spiders can produce 6,000 bags an hour running at full capacity which takes about 80-90 volunteers to do.

The City of Fargo has pre-scheduled area schools to take on day shift operations from 9am-2pm. Sandbag Central Director, Bruce Grubb, says the school's are vital to reaching their goal of producing 100,000 sandbags a day.

"The nice thing about them being pre-scheduled is we know that through the ten day sandbag period how many volunteers that we'll have."

Sandbag central takes around 300 volunteers to run at full capacity for the entire day. If you want to volunteer and help out, you can do so by calling 701-476-4000 to schedule a time.
