According to the American Heart Association adults are spending more time at work than ever before.

An unfortunate side effect is that, as a nation, we're becoming more inactive.

This is a problem when you consider that physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease!

But take heart! It's a problem you can help fix by encouraging your community and company to take part in the American Heart Association's National Walking Day.
 
On this day, Americans are encouraged to lace up their sneakers and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk.
 
It's a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to give your family, friends and co-workers a friendly push toward a healthier life.
 
And research has shown that walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health.
 
This morning on the Valley Today, Kyle and Lisa talked about some easy ways to get motivated and get moving.
 
You can go high tech with a smartphone app, there are plenty to choose from.  But low-tech things like bringing your sneakers to work so you can talk a walk during your lunch are great too.
 
In case you missed it, here are 5 more easy ways to start walking.
 
1. Set Goals - the American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of activity a day.
 
2. Spread it Out - take at 10 to 15 minute walk three times a day.

3. Email Less - walk to your co-workers office to ask a question.

4. Avoid the Elevator - take the stairs whenever you can.

5. Have Walking Meetings - need to talk to less than 5 people, consider making it a walking meeting around the block.
