Fargo Prepares Sandbag Central, Asks for Your Help

Posted: Updated:

Today Fargo city crews are putting the finishing touches on sandbag central and volunteer phone lines have opened up as well. All that's left, wrangling up the volunteers. Valley News Live has the latest on Fargo's flood preparation.

As the ice melts away from the mighty red it's a peaceful view. But as we're all so used to that could all change from peaceful to burden really fast.

Fargo's Mayor, Dennis Walaker, is waiting to see how this flood stacks up to years past just like the rest of us, "it all depends on the melt. Everybody is worried about a heavy duty rain. Well normally April is a month of showers."

But Matt Nelson of the Fargo Fire Department and his crew are ready either way,"we're certainly used to filling sandbags and placing sandbags. Unfortunately we have to do it again this year. It's important we all come together." Says Nelson.

At sandbag central in Fargo crews are preparing for the volunteers scheduled to start showing up on Wednesday. They have a goal of preparing 1 million bags, over the next two weeks. Because even with all of the fancy sandbag making tools, it wouldn't be possible without volunteers. Cindy Miller will play a role in organizing volunteer work. She says she has plenty of jobs, for those willing to help."Sometimes it's hard for people to get going at first when they don't realize the risk. Right now we don't see it. The waters haven't risen a whole lot and people aren't realizing the urgency of it." Says Miller.

Even with all the perfect tools for the job, without volunteers it couldn't be done. Sandbag central will be open for the next two weeks, Monday through Saturday from 8am till 7pm. Non stop volunteers coming in on the hour, 300 present hopefully all the time.

Mayor Walaker says filling a million bags in that amount of time is realistic with your help, "we think we could make this at the minimum of 10 days. 50 thousand bags per day if we get the volunteers." Says Mayor Walaker.

Sandbag central opens its doors Wednesday morning at 8am. 300 volunteers will be needed every hour from 8:00am to 7:00pm for the next couple weeks. Some of those time slots are already filled up. But others are in need of extra helping hands. Find out when the best time to volunteer is by visiting our website at valleynewslive.com. Just click on the hot button.
