Fargo Competes for Toughest Weather City

Posted: Updated:

As NCAA March Madness wraps up, the Weather Channel took on its own version.

Sixty-four cities were picked to compete for the toughest weather city in the country.

Valley News Team's Hope Hanselman shows us how Fargo holds up.

Ah... March, that time of the year when winter winds down to make way for some of the worst weather in the country. And weather.com is taking bets.

"Judging these cities, yeah, I could put Fargo into the final there," John Anderson, who grew up in Wahpeton, said.

Fargo is already the reigning champion of the competition.

Lisa Green, meteorologist at Valley News Live, says between blizzards, floods and tornado outbreaks, this title was well deserved.

"I do think Fargo is a unique place, I mean we're right in the center of the continent so we don't have that big body of water to regulate our extremes," Green said.

Fargo has already staked its claim over the Midwest. Now, it's time to take things to a national arena.

In the western corner: Fairbanks, Alaska, sneaking up with frighteningly long winters and record lows.

Down south: Lubbock, Texas, packing powerful high winds in dry conditions.

And representing the Northeast: Caribou, Maine, hitting hard with heavy snowfall, twice as much as what we see in Fargo.

"A lot of people can put up with the heat but not a lot of people can put up with the cold," Siri Western, of Minneapolis, said.

So, there you have it. If you're going to have tough weather, you might as well brag about it.

"I'd definitely take pride in it, you know, make it to the finals I'll admit that I'm from this area," Anderson said.

The competition isn't exactly scientific. It's all based off votes.

Polls will open for the next round of voting among the "final four" on Tuesday. By Friday, the winner will be announced.
