Road Construction Season Kicks Off

Posted: Updated:

Spring is in the air. The snow is melting, jackets are getting lighter, and of course that means we will soon be seeing orange cones around every corner. Today the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced their plans for spring and summer. Valley News Live fills you in on some of the road construction projects that might spike your interest.

It's wet today but before you know it we'll be right in the middle of projects across Minnesota roadways costing the state a pretty penny.

Jody Martinson a district four transportation engineer out of Detroit Lakes told us about the budget, "last few years it's been about 55 million but this year we're reaching our largest construction season and that's about 75 million."

One project you'll notice if your heading on I-94, the stretch of road from Clearwater to Saint Cloud will be resurfaced, getting rid of all those bumps. But take it easy as the road construction teams finish their work up in late July. Jesse Miller the project engineer at Detroit Lakes MNDOT says it's all about keeping everyone on the roads safe, "just as long as you can slow down and work with us we'll work with you. We all want to get home at the end of the day so drive safe and slow."

About 7 and a half miles of new concrete will be poured along that stretch of I-94. The price tag is 16.5 million dollars but it should last 30 years.

While it's difficult to get excited about road construction. One project in particular might spike your interest if you live in Moorhead. They plan on resurfacing Main Ave. from 4th St. all the way to 8th St. It's a project that was given up on last year.

"The project starts May 20th and goes to September. All summer long they'll be little projects here and there." Says Miller.

They'll be replacing signals along Main Ave. as well so expect lane closures. Another project MNDOT will be working on this summer is installing about 30 miles worth of cable median barriers on I-94. Fergus Falls will get them, Alexandria, and Moorhead. They're proven to prevent cars from crossing the median, and creating horrific head on crashes.

So slow down... Pay attention... And just get through the unofficial season in the Midwest, road construction.

Highway 78 will also be getting a facelift late this summer. MNDOT will be completing a construction project from battle lake to Perham. That project starts in August.
