High School Twitter Confessions Stir Controversy

Posted: Updated:

A new trend on Twitter has parents, school officials, and even law enforcement on high alert.

It's called "Twitter confessions," and they're floating around on social media through hashtags and Twitter pages. We took a look at South Fargo "Bruins Confessions" page, where students have posted insults and have even gone so far as accusing others of rape.

Some of the more common Tweets constitute cyber-bullying, while others are even more serious. It is the latter which has caught the attention of Fargo police.

One tweet accuses a teacher of sending "free nudes."

Another accuses a student of rape and features the hashtag "#thatshouldgotothecops."

We spoke with the Fargo Police Department this afternoon, where officials say two people have come forward with harassment complaints. Investigators have been assigned to the cases and are trying to contact Twitter to see if they can get information identifying the kids.

As far as shutting down the sites, police say that's a civil matter that needs to go through the courts.
