Restaurant Report Card

Posted: Updated:

It is Tuesday. That means it is time for our "Restaurant Report Card" segment. This week, we went across the river into Moorhead to look at the latest health inspector reports for restaurants.

We focused on two restaurants, the China Buffet and the Fryn' Pan, both in Moorhead off Highway 10.

We began with China Buffet.

Right off the top, the health inspector's report said, "Discontinue draining egg rolls in the mop sink."

We also found that China Buffet was storing food in cardboard containers in the fridge and freezer. That is a violation because cardboard is not a proper food container.

One of the managers, Chang Ni, spoke to us about these issues.

Ni said the egg rolls never touched the mop sink. They were in a container. He said now the restaurant uses a different sink.

He also spoke about the use of cardboard. "We bought a lot of the plastic washable containers so we can store the food," said Ni.

After China Buffet, we turned our attention to the Fryn' Pan.

One repeat offense stuck out.

The dishwashing person was handling dirty dishes, then handling clean ones before washing his hands.

There were also cleanliness issues. Shelves were not being cleaned in storage areas, and microwaves, the pizza oven and the blade cover for the meat slicer were all dirty.

One of the owners, Dave Stukel, said there is no excuse for this type of report, especially repeat violations.

"The health inspections that we get at our Moorhead location are very disappointing to us, and we're working very hard with management and the employees to correct all of these problems," said Stukel.

But this segment is not all about critical and non-critical violations. We also reward restaurants that have had a clean health inspection.

This week we were in Moorhead at the Qdoba Mexican Grill to present our "Clean Plate Award." We spoke with General Manager Amanda Schoon about receiving it.

"Actually it means a lot," said Schoon. "I have a really strong management team. Our staff they come in every morning, and we have a back wall cleaning list. We take pride. Obviously customers come in and the first thing they see is what the restaurant appears."
