Fargo Daycare Closes For Weekend After Accusations

Posted: Updated:

This next story we got from a viewer who blew the whistle on a local business that wasn't acknowledging their mistake. Some parents out of West Fargo picked up their daughters Thursday night from a south Fargo day care, and noticed a chemical smell. They say that employees at Tons of Fun Drop-In Childcare appeared to be painting with little ventilation, and dinner being served all while their kids were being baby sat. They turned to the Valley News Live to find out what the smell was and whether or not it's fixed.

Dropping your kids off at daycare, is supposed to entail a break from the business of it all. But when Karla Brosowske and her husband picked up their daughters Thursday night. There was little relief found, after having a night off. "We had walked in and immediately our noses were burning and our eyes were itchy and we had asked them what that smell was." Says Karla Brosowske.

The walls inside Tons of Fun Drop-In Childcare appeared to be painted, and employees propped a door open for ventilation, but no fans were running. Brosowske says there were about a dozen kids inside.

"I had asked why they didn't choose to do that during closed hours their reply was the manager was just here and they just finished up." Says Brosowske.

But the owner, Jason Gette tells a different story. Gette says it didn't happen that way at all, "in no way do I feel we put any kids at risk. The product was put on early in the morning. There was no active painting while the daycare was in process."

Brosowske who has been seeking answers and accountability since Thursday night says her daughter says other wise, "at one point my oldest daughter stated that they had told the younger children to stay away from the stinky stuff, it's poison."

Inside Tons of Fun there is what looks to be spackle or a primer up on several of the walls. But the question remains, is it appropriate to put up spackle while kids are present? The Fargo Health Inspector told us that they should have quartered off sections with plastic to do that kind of work. The Health Inspector says they also should have adequate ventilation when dealing with paint primers or spackle. But it's unlikely the kids at the daycare were in danger because of either of those elements.

Friday afternoon Social Services stopped by and changes were made. The owner says they will have to finish the work up and very soon they will,"we decided to close the location at five o'clock and finish the project over the weekend." Says Gette.

The Fargo Health Inspector today told us that if you question the safety of a business, especially when food is present, don't hesitate to report it to your local public health department.
