West Fargo Hockey Gun Raffle Postponed - Valley News Live - KVLY/KXJB - Fargo/Grand Forks

West Fargo Hockey Gun Raffle Postponed

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE:

The much-anticipated gun raffle being held as a fundraiser for the West Fargo Hockey Association has been pushed back a month. Two hundred guns were set to be raffled off Friday, March 15 but the following information is now posted on their web page:

"Due to the anticipated turnout and moving the banquet location, we've encountered permitting issues in the City of Fargo. Therefore the West Fargo Hockey Gun Raffle Banquet has been postponed until April 13th. More details to follow as they become available."

The problems come down to the location of the event.

Everything would have been fine if the raffle was still being held at the Speedway Event Center in West Fargo. Because it was moved to the Holiday Inn in Fargo for the large number of people they are expecting, gaming permits they have in West Fargo do not apply to Fargo.

If the Hockey Association continued with the raffle, members worked it out with the state and Fargo to do the drawing in West Fargo and then read the winners at the Holiday Inn.

But other games would not be legal.

West Fargo Hockey Association Business Manager Mark Lester says, "As is typical with these types of events, you also have various games that are going on during, you know, before, during. Those were the games that we wanted to make sure we're technically covered in this event."

Those games are mainly other raffles for things like jerseys, pictures and other guns.

The Hockey Association will now go through a review process with the gaming auditor in Fargo to hopefully get the event to the city commission for approval.

If members do that, they should be able to do the drawing and announcement at the Holiday Inn and have the other games.

Lester hopes everyone will understand, though he knows some people are upset. "It doesn't make sense regardless of who might be upset to do something to jeopardize what we as a board and myself as a business manager do every day to keep those kids skating on the ice and provide a good hockey program," says Lester.

The banquet is rescheduled for April 13. Ticket holders do not have to be present to win.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Need a gun or want a gun? Good luck. Stores everywhere say they are having a hard time getting their shelves stocked. But if you tend to be on the lucky side, a local fundraiser could put a firearm in your hands.

Guns. Firearms. Semi-automatics. For many this may be as close as you're going to get. But cal Helgeson with the West Fargo Hockey Association says that doesn't have to be the case. "With the shortage of guns, we have secured all of our guns," says Helgeson. You see these tickets are the key to winning one of 200 guns. "We have a full list," says Helgeson.

Guns that are hard to get can be found on the raffle. "More difficult ones are on here," says Helgeson. Helgeson says they have seen people all across the country purchase one of these.

With the shortage of guns taking place, the West Fargo hockey association says they don't mind the popularity of the raffle because it helps them with their shortage of ice rinks.

"With 20 percent increase this year, we have a big need for ice," says Helgeson. He says every ticket sold here will not only help you get one stop closer to one of these, but the association will be closer to getting what they need.

The association hopes to raise $90,000 with the raffle. It will happen on march 15th. To purchase one of the tickets, head to Scheels on 45th street in Fargo.
