Free Kindergarten to Be Offered in Fergus Falls and Underwood

Posted: Updated:

Inside this Underwood kindergarten class, every day of the week learning is fun, but for some in town, they don't have this option.

"We offer full time or part time," says Dr. Jeremiah Olson, Superintendent of Underwood Schools.

Part time is free but full time will cost you. "When students go through full time kindergarten they have a better experience in first grade," says Olson.

That's why starting next year, the Underwood school district will offer full time, free all day kindergarten. "We will be taking that tuition barrier away," says Olson.

It's something Fergus Falls school district is doing as well. "Anywhere from 1/4 to 1/3 of our families choose the part time option," says Principal Scott Colbeck. Principal Colbeck says when the change goes into effect, he expects more kids to enroll full time. "I do know families selecting the part time for financial reasons."

Moving to a full-time free kindergarten, it will cost the Underwood school district about $20,000 and Fergus Falls about $125,000 but both districts say that's a small price to pay for what these students have learned by the first grade.
