Gov. Dayton To Release New Budget Plan

Posted: Updated:

Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton plans to release his updated budget today and it looks like you won't have to worry about paying sales taxes on clothes.

An updated economic forecast showed Minnesota's budget deficit shrank by more than $400 million.

Last week, the Governor said he was 99.8% sure he would drop a sales tax expansion from his proposed budget, but he plans to keep an income tax hike on wealthy Minnesotans.

But some lawmakers aren't ready to say no just yet.

Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk says there's still room to discuss an expanded sales tax even though Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton intends to abandon that budget approach.

Bakk, of Cook, said Monday that the Senate Tax Committee plans to consider whether some services should be part of the sales tax mix.

Bakk, also a Democrat, says there will be "significant conversation" about whether a bigger pool of taxpayers should pay additional income taxes.
