Dress Swap Makes Prom More Cost-Effective

Posted: Updated:

As some high schoolers get carried away with the prom dress, one Detroit Lakes community is working to make that process more cost-effective.

Long gone are the days when finding a date was the most stressful part about prom.

"I ended up spending about $450 just for the dress," Alycia Windingland, senior at Detroit Lakes High School, said.

Alycia knows it's financing the night that she'll lose sleep over.

"Then it was an extra $125 for alterations, of course, and hair- that was $20."

But, thanks to the help of one Detroit Lakes seamstress, those days may be gone too.

"There are some fabulous dresses in the community sitting in closets collecting dust, so we thought why not give people a chance to sell them, walk away with a little cash and give someone else a change to buy a cheaper dress," Nikki Caulfield, owner of tailoring shop Skirting the Rules, said.

So, when the rest of prom costs you an arm and a leg, at least your dress won't.

What would cost you hundreds of dollars, at this dress swap is just forty bucks.

And the price tag isn't the only relief for these high school budgets. They're happy to know fashion won't be compromised.

"I was like, okay there's probably a lot of dresses from the 70s like mom-style, but there's actually a lot of cute ones here," Alycia said.

The team collected more than a hundred dresses to choose from.

Nikki says, at least a quarter of those have never even been worn.

Now, Alycia is putting the worrisome days to rest and looking ahead to one special night.
