Trying To Start The Next Big Business - Valley News Live - KVLY/KXJB - Fargo/Grand Forks

Creating a new business is tough, especially when failure rate is so high. North Dakotas first Startup Weekend brought entrepreneur's together in Fargo to take a chance to start the next big business.  

Sometimes it's the most creative ideas that will one day help our community like Todd Richardson's business to start a prescription sock business that would help put them in the hands of those who need them.

"It would send you new socks, you can wear them, get that new fluffy sock feeling, and you'd send them back, we're gonna wash them and donate them to salvation army or some of the local charity's."

But many small businesses aren't able to stay on their feet. Only a fracture make more than a few years. So an event called Startup Weekend helps them succeed by taking their ideas, and flipping them into reality.

"It's built around totally networking with people you've never met, and maybe even creating a new business that might make it." says Maribeth Joraanstad who helped organize the event. But it wasn't all about the ideas.

"They get to meet those people that they might call on later, and be like hey I'm actually starting this business, and I need some legal help because I don't know what I'm doing. And so those connections I think are really important for the future of their business." Maribeth says.

Connections they may need to help make their start-up become one of the 27 million small businesses in the U.S. 

"It's totally the future of our community as well, not only a fun event where you meet a bunch of people, but it could be a future for our town." Maribeth exclaims.
