Online micro-lending platform Milaap.org is seeking to honour 100 inspiring women on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2013. Milaap raises funds for women entrepreneurs from rural parts of India that will serve as capital for them to start or expand their small businesses.
At Milaap, 83% of the borrowers are women entrepreneurs who are uplifting their families and communities out of poverty. Women like Sridevi, who despite challenging circumstances, expanded her crafts unit with the help of a loan, and is now employing more than 60 people from her community. Today Sridevi is not only empowering herself and her family but providing happiness to her entire community. This was because she was able to receive a helping hand when she most needed it. Milaap urges other women, especially entrepreneurs to encourage women like Sridevi, and help them realize their dreams.
Milaap is calling people on Twitter to recognize and honor inspiring women in their lives by using the hashtag #women4change. The tweets should include @[nominee’s name] and the reason why they are nominated. The selected women will receive a $25 Milaap gift card on behalf of the community that nominated her. This gift card will enable them to them empower a woman entrepreneur on Milaap.org in need of capital with a $25 loan.
Anyone can make a loan to help women like Sridevi set up small businesses by making a small loan on http://www.milaap.org. These funds are given out as loans to the women, and it is repaid in 12-24 months. Join Milaap in celebrating Women’s Day to appreciate women who inspire us, women who make a strong impact in our lives and create more stories of change!
