Jordan, MN, Police Setting Up Shop in Schools

Posted: Updated:

JORDAN, Minn. (AP) - One small-town Minnesota school district is taking a unique approach to keeping students safe: The police are moving in. The police department in the community of Jordan, south of Minneapolis, is setting up satellite offices in public schools. The idea came from Police Chief Bob Malz as officials were looking for ways to improve security after the December school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Under the plan, officers will conduct some of their daily work from the schools, while still going out into the community to respond to emergencies. The hope is that armed officers at the doors and squad cars in school parking lots will discourage would-be attackers.

A vast majority of parents support the plan. The officers stationed at the schools hope to move in by early April.
