Apartment Fire in Moorhead Forces People to Escape Through Windows

Posted: Updated:

An apartment fire in Moorhead, MN forced people to evacuate the building, some even escaping through windows. It happened at 2408 3rd Avenue North around 11:00 Thursday night.

The fire started in a lower level apartment and caused black smoke to fill the entire apartment building. Firefighters quickly put the fire out and set up ventilation in the building so that they can try to get people who live on the upper floors back inside this morning.

Officials say one person may have an injured ankle and a few people suffered from smoke inhalation, but no reports of major injuries.

Damage was contained to the immediate apartment and a small area in the hallway, with a preliminary damage estimate around $8,000.

The cause of the fire was an unattended cooking pan that was left on as the tenant fell asleep. Fire officials say cooking related incidents accounted for 50% of all fires in Minnesota in 2011.
