In a Challenging Job Market Reassessment, not Complacency, Leads to Unexpected Awakenings and Opportunities

With unemployment continuing to hover just below 8% (per the Department of Labor) both job seekers and the employed may be tempted to focus on positions and tasks with which they have the most experience, says Certified Career Coach, speaker and author Hallie Crawford. Although Crawford doesn’t suggest workers abandon their skillsets, she recommends her clients pursue career assessments for their ability to uncover latent talents—and reports this is helping them open new doors.
“One of the greatest barriers to professional growth—for both the unemployed seeking jobs and workers hoping to advance their current careers—is complacency,” says Crawford. “Especially during times of hardship, we tend to focus on the familiar, even if it’s not something that gives us self-fulfillment. Recently, I have been working with clients who engaged in career assessments and discovered they were compatible with jobs they had never considered. That’s a powerful way to expand your options.”
Crawford relates the story of one job seeker who took an assessment and discovered he was well-suited to being a firefighter. He had never considered taking an active public service role, and the assessment test was very illuminating for him. (It was also a beneficial bit of information. With a median salary of $45,000+ per annum, many firefighting positions have no previous experience requirements and don’t require a college degree (per the DoL’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2012-13 Edition).
“Those who take career assessments may not always discover a new found calling, but for many the test will open their eyes to unimagined possibilities,” says Crawford. “For others it may reinforce that they are on exactly the right career path. That not only reinforces their efforts; it’s also tangible evidence they can show an employer that they have the right attitude and personality for their chosen career.”
