UPDATE: Alerus Center Opens Doors as Emergency Shelter

Posted: Updated:

The City of Grand Forks has opened the Alerus Center as an emergency shelter for motorists stranded by Monday's blizzard. The American Red Cross was on scene to provide additional assistance.

The shelter expected 30 people .. but 226 showed up.

It was virtually impossible to get a room in Grand Forks last night after I-29 was shut down. The stranded travelers included many aboard a tour bus and also a plane that was able to land last night at the Grand Forks Airport.

The Red Cross helped provide cots and hot coffee at the Alerus. Travelers were housed in the arena locker rooms on the west side of the building.

Any further questions should be directed to the American Red Cross, which can be reached at 701-213-8397.
