Highways, Interstates Slowly Reopen

Posted: Updated:

Drivers lined the interstate for miles Monday morning through mid-afternoon, waiting for I-94 to open. About 2:00 p.m. westbound and eastbound lanes of I-94 from Alexandria to Fargo reopened.

Valley News Live talked with one truck driver who was stuck in Valley City Sunday night and was able to make it to Fargo Monday, but is now stuck again.  At one point, the line of semis and other vehicles stretched from Exit 6 just on the edge of Moorhead, to 25th Street in Fargo.

I-29 opened late this afternoon as well.

Motorists are still reminded that the roadways are covered with ice and compacted snow and are extremely icy. Motorists must slow down and use extreme caution while traveling.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Minnesota State Patrol opened Highway 210 between Fergus Falls and Breckenridge at 11:00 Monday Morning, and Highway 10 between Moorhead and Audubon reopened at 10:30 a.m.

MnDOT reminds motorists to be patient while snowplow operators work to improve driving conditions. The majority of snowplow crashes take place during "clean up" when motorists resume their normal speeds.

The Minnesota State Patrol also issued several citations for people going around barricades. There was not an official number available, but Sgt. Jesse Grabow said he wrote about ten.

Grabow said, "Everybody's got their own reason they try to justify it. But again, we really wanna stress the importance of not putting your schedule ahead of safety. For some people it's doctor's appointments. But if it comes to that point, anybody that's living around this tri-state region, the Red River Valley...whatever, knows that the weather was an issue, and if you have to reschedule that's far better."

There were no major injuries, though two troopers were hit in their cars. The troopers are expected to be okay. About 160 cars ended up in the ditches and medians. Most of those were on Interstate 94 and Highway 10.
