Significant Water Break Floods Downtown St. Paul

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of gallons of water have flooded several streets in downtown St. Paul after what officials say was a significant break of an underground water line.

Rick Larkin, the city's director of emergency management, says the leak early Saturday caused a widespread drop in water pressure. A few hours later, officials isolated the part of the line that ruptured and restored water pressure to the rest of the grid.

Larkin says eight to 10 square blocks were damaged by floodwaters. He says a large section of road will have to be dug up to repair the broken section of the water main.

Because the area sits on a hill, streets rather than nearby apartment and office buildings sustained most of the damage. Some hospitals temporarily switched to reserve water supplies.
