Special Olympics Athletes Take Home Medals From Winter World Games

Posted: Updated:

Two North Dakota Special Olympics athletes are back home, and they have some bragging rights. Tommy Mikkelson of Grand Forks and Blaine Schulz of Jamestown just got back from competing in Special Olympics World Winter Games in South Korea.

With signs in hand...

Friend, David Dahlgren, says "I'm very proud of him."

And teddy bears, balloons and valentines...

Friend, Vicki Jones, says, "Tommy's favorite. Chocolate chip cookies and a one in a billion chocolate bar."

This fan club is ready to welcome home their heroes.

Tommy's Mom, Jolene Mikkelson, says, "He starts chanting. Team USA!"

After nearly 20 hours of flights, Blaine Schulz and Tommy Mikkelson return home from the Special Olympics Winter World games in South Korea with a lot to be proud of!

Schulz says, "4th is in the 200, this is in the 400, this is in the relay."

"I got one 3rd place, one 1st place and one 8th place in three events, so I'm pretty proud.

Even with the hardware and fan club, Blaine and Tommy say they won't let it get to their heads, because after all, they did it for their country.

Schulz says, "Team USA rocks! Team USA rocks!"

"We're Team USA! We're #1 in the world!" says Mikkelson.

And they say that love for their country will make then work even harder.

Mikkelson says, "I want to train even harder to go to the national games in Princeton New Jersey."

"I worked very hard to 3 1/2 months to get where I did," says Schulz.

And above all, they'll remember the people who helped them along the way.

"Excited to see my mom and sister, show all my friends," says Schulz.

Mikkelson says, "I'm thankful for you coming mom and dad. You were a great support."

Besides the awards they won in South Korea, Blaine also has another title. He was named the Special Olympics North Dakota Athlete of the Year.
