Elementary School Offering Women's-Only Firearm Training

Posted: Updated:

As the debate against gun control continues, a local firearms class isn't letting it bring them down.  The class is designed to teach people how to use a gun the right way. But where and who they are training may surprise you.

Jerry Schroeder teaches a class at Horace elementary.

"I'm the lead instructor."

But he is not teaching about reading, writing, or arithmetic, this class is all about guns.

"The basic thing is that it's a hunter education class."

Schroeder says they have been bringing guns into the classroom for years,

to teach anyone that wants to learn about safety when it comes to one of these.

"Since the program, started it's saved so many lives."

But this class isn't for guys, this is a class just for women, with some of them as young as 11 years old.

"We've taught in different schools and had guns but then policies changed but we're fortunate to bring guns in here but we don't bring live ammunition."

Schroeder says some may not think it's the best idea to bring guns into the class after recent tragic events, but he says here in North Dakota it works.

"We just try and find a place to hold 50 members."

Because he says the more people who know how to correctly handle one of these, less tragedies will hopefully take place.

"Some have never handled a shot gun."

So it shouldn't matter where lessons are being taught as long as they're safe.

The hunter education class is part of a North Dakota game and fish program.

The next women's class will be taking place on March 4th, but this time not at a school, but Maple-Sheyenne Lutheran church.
