Healthier Me: Hospice Becoming More Mainstream

Posted: Updated:

In Tuesday's Healthier Me, more dying patients are opting for hospice care now than did 10 years ago, but they are also spending more time receiving aggressive, potentially painful, and possibly unnecessary treatment in the days before their death.

According to a study conducted at Brown University and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 40% of Medicare patients used hospice in 2009; that's double the number of those who used the service in 2000.

The number of patients spending time in intensive care during their last month of life also went up. A quarter of hospice patients were there for three days or less.
