Early Building Permit Approved for West Fargo School in Fargo

Posted: Updated:

Fargo city commissioners approved an early building permit for a West Fargo school to be built on Fargo property. That means the West Fargo School District can start making plans for their next school, which is desperately needed in that growing community.

Monday's meeting was a preliminary step so the West Fargo School District can put out bids and get their plans ready. But according to the Fargo Planning and Development Department, groundbreaking is expected to start as soon as the snow melts.

The fact that this school is part of the West Fargo School District, but will be built in Fargo, raises some questions. One being, "How is that possible?" The zoning map you find on the left of this page shows why. That entire orange area you see is part of the city, but belongs to the West Fargo School District. This was put in place years ago when zoning was being done for the area. Fargo claimed it as their city, but West Fargo claimed it as their school district.

The new school is set to be built at 3700 54th Street South. That's where that yellow dot is on the zoning map. It's located on the edge of town in an area that is rapidly growing. To accommodate that increase, kids from both Fargo and West Fargo will be able to attend. West Fargo has been looking to add another school building to help crowding, and this spot, according to the Planning and Development Department, was the perfect spot.

Fargo Planning Administrator, Nicole Crutchfield, says, "This location is actually surrounded by development on all four sides, so it's kind of one of the last remaining sections north of 40th Avenue to be built."

Right now, the planning administration is working on developing the area around the school. That means this spring, more houses and roads will be built as the school starts going up. The Fargo Planning and Developing Department says the target open date for the new school is as early as 2014.
