KARE 11 - Minneapolis -

UPDATE:

Authorities have identified a Maple Grove man and his grandmother who drowned when their car broke through the ice on Lake Minnetonka.

The Hennepin County medical examiner says Harland Dietrich, 31, and Mary Ann Haram, 87, were both pronounced dead just after 7 p.m. Saturday Feb. 2 at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Authorities say it's extremely dangerous to drive or walk on channels and pressure ridges on Minnetonka. Fourteen vehicles have broken through the ice there this winter. All but one of the accidents happened on channels or pressure ridges.

STORY:

Officials say two people, an elderly woman and a man in his 30s, were rescued from a submerged car on Lake Minnetonka after being underwater for almost an hour.

According to Major Darrell Huggett with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, dispatch received a call from the man at 2:24 p.m. stating that he was driving under the County Highway 101 bridge on Gray's Bay when his car fell through the ice.

Emergency crews responded and found the car submerged in about 10 feet of water. The Hennepin County Dive Team arrived on scene and began working to get the two occupants out of the car.

The two victims were transported--the man by medical helicopter and the woman by ambulance--to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Their current condition is unknown. Major Huggett said neither victim was conscious nor breathing when they were transported.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is not releasing the names of the victims, though they are both from the Twin Cities area.

Officials say this is the 14th vehicle through the ice on Lake Minnetonka this season.
