Fargo Police Warn of Phone Scam

Posted: Updated:

The Fargo Police Department wants you to know about a phone scam circulating around the area. Police are getting reports of someone calling and posing as a collection agent for a local utility company.

The caller instructs you to purchase a pre-paid money card and turn it over as payment for an account that is currently open. At least one person in the Fargo area has lost about $500 in the scam.

Police say they have seen similar scams in the past, and remind you to be cautious when someone contacts you over the phone and tries to get the payment through a money transfer service such as MoneyGram or Western Union.
