Moorhead Tows Over 60 Cars - Valley News Live - KVLY/KXJB - Fargo/Grand Forks

Moorhead Tows Over 60 Cars

Posted: Updated:

More than 60 car owners had their vehicles towed from certain Moorhead streets Wednesday. It was the first street clearing in the new snow removal district, but many residents say they didn't know about it.

From 8am through 5pm Ed's Towing had already towed 59 cars, doing anywhere from twelve to fifteen each truck. Cars on the even house numbered side of the streets kept both police and tow truck drivers busy. An expensive mistake, preceded by warnings from Police notifications, to emails as well as signs on the side of the street.

Lieutenant. Tory Jacobson says, "This has been something that's been enforced, and in effect since September, with the council making a new ordinance, and this is the first time the snow emergency declaration has happened, so I understand there's a learning curve."

But some people say not enough notice was given because people like Joshua Alexander don't have cable or get the newspaper. But thankfully Joshua's roommate had an eye out the window.

"I saw one of the first cars in front of us getting towed, so then we ran out there. They were pretty set on taking it away, and then finally they were like, well since it's not hooked up and the tow truck is busy with other things, he's like I'll let you keep it this time but you need to move your car right away." Joshua says.

Police say that's been happening all day. "We have seen a number of people who've seen the activity on the outside of the street, and then realize they had forgotten to move their vehicle, and went out and gotten their car out of the way, that's a wonderful thing to happen." Lieutenant. Jacobson says.

Police say they don't benefit from towing the cars because it ties up officers. But they need to help clear the roads.

"Certainly this is not a money making endeavor, we are loosing money and certainly we are not doing the job as well as we'd like to." Lieutenant. Jacobson says.

A brochure from the city of Moorhead shows exactly where you can and cannot park tomorrow within the city's snow district. We attached the link at the bottom of the page.

On the third day of the snow removal declaration, you can't park on the south and west sides of the street, that's the side with odd numbered houses. These rules will be in effect from 8am to 8 PM.
