In tonight's Healthier Me, Drug Enforcement Administration officials have asked the Food & Drug Administration to consider stricter prescription rules for painkillers like Vicodin which contain hydrocodone after noting a significant spike in people abusing the drugs.
The FDA is meeting to determine whether narcotics containing hydrocodone need to be classified as Schedule II drugs. If they decide in favor of the measure, it would mean fewer prescriptions could be written at one time, and pharmacies would be required to keep the drugs locked up in cabinets or safes.
Other painkillers like Oxycontin and Percocet would be subject to the same rules.
