Need For Blood Donations

Posted: Updated:

January is national blood donor month, but many donation centers are noticing a shortage of people who are healthy enough to help. The flu has swept through the Valley early,  and that's kept people out of the donor chair. Valley News Teams Kristi Larson stopped in at United Blood services today to help pick up the pace, and help save some lives.

"I've done 85 times." says David Remmen. He's done 85 donations of blood, that's about eleven gallons through out his lifetime, "I got into donating blood when I was 18, my dad donated blood all the time so I got started and I've been doing it ever since." David says.

But January is already a hard month because of the higher need for blood from surgeries and accidents from the holidays. Many centers are noticing that an early flu season has also affected their numbers.

"It's hitting us hard, just like it is hitting any business with their staff being out, due to the flu we're also seeing a decrease of our donor population coming in." says United Blood Services Executive Director Connie Morris.

So blood services are urging people to come help during donor month, so they can continue to meet the numbers they need to hit. "We service 94 hospitals, so the blood is being used locally and we greatly appreciate everybody who's stopping by to be a hero." Connie says.

Reporter Kristi Larson gave donating a try Wednesday, and was told in the 15 minutes it took, she saved three lives.

"I've got two kids, and so far we've been lucky and none of them have gotten hurt or anything, but I've always figured that if they do and need blood it's nice to have it available." says David.

If you want to help donate blood to the United Blood Services:
