Hearing Over Fighting Sioux Nickname

Posted: Updated:

A three-judge appeals panel is holding a hearing in St. Paul Thursday on a lawsuit over UND's retired Fighting Sioux nickname.

A judge last may dismissed the lawsuit filed against the NCAA by nickname supporters at the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock Sioux Reservations, who then appealed that decision.

They claimed they were not included when the NCAA and the state negotiated a settlement to retire the nickname.

The supporters appealed to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

68% of North Dakota voters last June voted to drop the nickname.
