Obesity & Fatal Crashes

Posted: Updated:

In tonight's Healthier Me, here's another reason to stick with that new year's resolution to lose weight: a new study has found that obese adults are more likely to die in a car crash.

Researchers studied fatal car crashes and used driver's license information to categorize drivers based on their weight. They found obese adults were 20% more likely to die in a car crash than normal-weight adults, and drivers who were extremely obese were 50% more likely to die.

The researchers aren't sure why this increased risk exists, but they suspect vehicle design and the fact obese adults likely have worse health than others may play a role.
