Kids Find a Safe Way to Learn About Ice Fishing

Posted: Updated:

Weather this weekend was bad news for ice fishers in the area.

Many events were canceled, but one group found a way around it.

The YMCA held its 12th annual ice fishing tournament, but the young fishers found they didn't have to brave the cold to cast a line.

"If this was held outdoors then it would have been canceled," Scott Brewer, president of the F-M Walleye fishing club, said.

When the roads are rough but the waters are calling, you won't have to travel far for an adventure like the one Lukas and David Robinson will be talking about all season.

"I wanted to go fishing because we never got to go fishing," David said, with his face down a cardboard cut-out decorated like a frozen pond.

Organizers say the YMCA used to bus dozens of kids out to a lake for the tournament, but it came with it's share of challenged. Between unplowed roads and open water, they say they turned to an indoor event years ago. In the safety of a gymnasium, kids like Lukas and David can learn more from the professional fishermen.

"To balance that with the challenges and the risk, we thought this to be best," Jerry Thoemke, President of the Service Club, said.

F-M Walleye came out with lures and lessons.

"A lot of it is just learning," Brewer said. "With kids it's nice to see when they haven't done something the excitement they get when they're doing something new."

The fish may be paper, the ice may be cotton, but this adventure is just beginning.

Brewer says it's better to have some kind of event than not being able to have anything at all.

Organizers at the event focused on ice safety. So, when the kids are ready to try the sport outside they'll be prepared.
