MN Lawmakers Consider Sales Tax on Clothing

Posted: Updated:

Facing a projected $1.1-billion deficit, Minnesota lawmakers are once again tossing around the idea of promoting a sales tax on clothing.

It's an idea that clothing retailers just across the river in Minnesota are having a hard time with. It's a huge draw for many looking to draw business into Minnesota at about a seven percent discount on clothes. Especially for higher end clothing like wedding dresses and tuxedo purchases that often times will run shoppers into hundreds of dollars.

Mark Bayer, Co-Owner of Alan Evans Bridal in Moorhead: "That's quite a bit of savings by coming over on this side of the river. If they change that advantage, it does affect us some."

Currently, Minnesota is one of just seven states that do not have a tax on clothing, though Minnesota also has a higher state sales tax than 88% of the country. North Dakota, on the other hand, has lower state sales tax than about 60% of the country at just 5%-7% for most purchases.

Wondering what sales tax on clothing costs you in North Dakota? There is a tax calculator based on where you're buying throughout North Dakota here.
