Update: Water in Oslo, MN, Out Again

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday, January 15  City of Oslo News Release:

UPDATE

There are some very happy families on the northern valley. After three days without running water, hundreds of folks living in Oslo, Minnesota finally have water again.

The town of about 330 people is 25-miles north of Grand Forks, and without water on tap for an entire weekend... it caused some personal problems.

Reporter: "So showers and baths are few?"

Gene Olson: "There is none… drinking water and hopefully melt enough to flush the toilet…ha."

The city supplied bottle water to people and delivered more to those who couldn't leave their homes.

Karen Cote, City Clerk: "We called all the residents and informed them of the water break and then we delivered cases of water to everyone."

Reporter: "How much?"

Cote: "67 cases we had."

The problem started Saturday morning, when the first water main broke. Then, after the first break was fixed, it broke in 3 more places around town.  Gary Mattson says our quickly changing temperatures are to blame.

Gary Mattson, City of Oslo: "This line feeds the whole town and going from 40 above one day down to below zero the next, the ground is shifting a lot."

Reporter: "So, you fixed 1 spot and it broke in other spots?"

Mattson :"Yes, in other spots."

After using his stove and microwave to melt snow so he could get water to flush the toilet, Gene Olson says he's had enough.

Gene Olson: "Ah yes, Ready to move in with the kids…ha."

City Clerk Karen Cote says they're still tallying up the cost of this weekend's mess.
