ND Chief Justice Marks 20 Years on High Court

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota's chief justice is celebrating his 20th year in the post. Gerald VandeWalle's anniversary is today. A justice since 1978, VandeWalle became chief justice on New Year's Day in 1993 after being unanimously elected to succeed Ralph Erickstad upon his retirement.

According to the North Dakota Supreme Court, VandeWalle in July became the longest-serving chief justice in the state's history when he passed Erickstad's record. His tenure on the Court will be 34 years in August, second only to Justice A.M. Christianson's 39 years.
