Fargo Home Floods After Frozen Pipes Burst

Posted: Updated:

A good reason to leave your heat on and shut off your water while you're away during the winter. A Fargo home was flooded by water after a pipe burst in the upstairs bathroom.
The homeowners were away, and kept the heat on, but it broke. Maintenance fixed the furnace, but the heat caused the plumbing to burst. The main level's ceiling collapsed, bringing down sheet rock and installation.
Assistant Fargo Fire Chief Larry Schuh says, "The tank to the toilet had frozen, expanded and cracked it, and of course it keeps trying to fill that, and there may also have been a break in the wall by the laboratory.  Long and short of it is if you're going to be gone during the winter time, make sure you heat is functioning and set high enough and also it'd be a good idea to turn your water off."
Fire department says the water may have been leaking a couple days...they spent time cleaning out the ceiling that had collapsed and vacuuming up water.
