Fargo Man Dead After Falling off Snowmobile

Posted: Updated:

A Fargo man died from a traumatic head injury after falling off his snowmobile on Christmas Day. The Otter Tail County Sheriff's office says Jerome Kotalik lost control of his snowmobile, possibly due to a mechanical failure of the throttle.

The Snowmobile accelerated and Kotalik fell off, hitting his head on a snowmobile trailer that was parked nearby. The 40-year-old was not wearing a helmet, but at the time it appears that he was planning to wear a helmet.

Authorities say it looks as if Kotalik had just started the snowmobile to warm it up when it accelerated. Helmets were nearby and another sled was warming up.

The accident happened on a property off of County Highway 9 near Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. The snowmobile involved in the crash was a 1995 Ski-Doo.
