Tornados, Severe Storms Hit on Christmas Day

Posted: Updated:

A massive storm system that dumped blinding snow and sleet around the nation's midsection and unleashed damaging tornadoes across Louisiana and Alabama is trekking toward the Northeast, slowing holiday travel.

Post-Christmas travelers braced for a second day of flight delays and cancellations, after the rare Christmas Day twisters splintered numerous homes. The storm system is blamed for three deaths and several injuries though no one was killed in the tornadoes.

Farther north on a line from Little Rock, Ark., to Cleveland, blizzard conditions are predicted for snow up to a foot deep as the system churned toward the Northeast.

Mobile was the biggest city hit by a twister on Tuesday. The storms knocked down countless trees, blew the roofs off homes and left many Christmas celebrations in the dark.
