A former Minot fire chief has been convicted of gross sexual imposition against a minor in a case involving a 12-year-old girl.

The Minot Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/RMLL0L) that 77-year-old Duwayne Daniel Ward was sentenced to five years in prison, with most suspended in favor of probation. Ward will serve a total of 6 months in prison and is ordered to register as a sex offender and have no contact with the victim.

According to police records, Ward was alone with the girl, who was known to him, in his southwest Minot home in October when the incident occurred.

Ward was the Minot fire chief for more than 16 years, beginning his tenure as chief in 1981 after spending more than two decades with the department. He retired in 1998.
