Two Gold Coins Found in Salvation Army Kettles

Posted: Updated:

One day after Valley News Live reported on the hardship the Salvation Army is facing this year, the Salvation Army announced a gold coin was deposited in the kettle at Scheels on 45th Street. This is the 10th year a gold coin has been found in a Fargo kettle.

The coin was a South African gold Krugerrand and is valued at over $1,600. On Monday, a quarter ounce gold coin was placed in the kettle at Northport Hornbacher's. The coin is valued at over $400.

"We're so grateful to the individual who deposited the gold coin.  It has become somewhat of a tradition and we anxiously wait each year to see if a special coin will come." said Captain Bill Mealy of The Salvation Army. "

The Salvation Army has 60% of its $825,000 goal for its 2012 campaign. As of Thursday morning 193 shifts of 2 ½ hours remain to be staffed by volunteers. It is vital that the kettles are fully staffed during this time so the public has the opportunity to make donations at any of the 34 kettle locations in Fargo- Moorhead.
