UPS Prepares for Busiest Shipping Day of the Year

Posted: Updated:

On an average day at UPS they deliver and pick-up around 16 million packages, but Thursday that number jumps to it's highest of the year, 28 million.

That comes down to drivers delivering 300 packages every second. Bruce Slettle, is marking his 23rd "peak day" at UPS and says he's ready for it. "I'm prepared for it, do it stop by stop and you can only do it one at a time and try to do it as safely as I possibly can and get everybody their stuff."

Even though Slettle, like most UPS Drivers, is very experienced. He needs an extra hand during this time of the year. That's why UPS hired 55,000 additional workers to help out from after Thanksgiving through the rest of the year.

Tim Johnson, who handles Human Resources for UPS in the North Plains District, says extra help is vital to the companies success on days like today. "We hire additional drivers, additional helpers, package handlers and it's very, very crucial."

UPS also put on 400 additional flights this week to keep up with the demand. When it's all said and done UPS will have delivered more than 135 million packages just this week.

There's still time to get your package shipped and have it arrive by Christmas. You can ship Thursday using UPS 2nd Day, if you wait until Friday you'll have to use UPS Next Day Air. Your shipments need to be dropped off by 6pm.
