Creighton Spurts Key 63-42 Win Over Bison Women

Creighton University scored 18 straight points over the last six minutes of the first half and the Bluejays defeated North Dakota State University 63-42 in a non-conference women's basketball played Sunday, Dec. 16, before a crowd of 968 at D.J. Sokol Arena.

North Dakota State (3-7), which has lost four straight, is scheduled to play at Green Bay (6-2) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18.

The Bison had trimmed a double-digit deficit to 22-19 on a Liz Keena offensive putback with 6:49 remaining in the first half.

Creighton (6-2) then responded with an 18-0 run sparked by Sarah Nelson, Marissa Janning and Ally Jensen to take a 40-19 lead into halftime. Jensen hit three three-pointers, Nelson scored five points and Janning added four during the spurt.

Alyssa Kamphaus made one of two free throws to give Creighton its biggest lead at 47-21 with 16:42 left.

The Bluejays went scoreless over six minutes and North Dakota State cut the deficit in half at 47-34 on a Marena Whittle jumper with 11:25 left to play, but couldn't come any closer. Katie Birkel, Jamie Van Kirk and Miki Stephenson took part in the rally.

Whittle led the Bison with a game-high 12 rebounds. Dani DeGagne, Birkel and Whittle each scored eight points. The Bison shot 26.3 percent from the field, but made 11 of 12 free throws.

Carli Tritz and Kamphaus led Creighton 11 points, while Nelson recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds. Tritz finished with six assists. The Bluejays shot 38.2 percent from the field and held a 45-41 rebounding edge.
