Oil well blowout reported near Lake Sakakawea

Posted: Updated:

An oil well blowout has been reported about a half mile from Lake Sakakawea, but state environmental officials say the lake does not appear compromised.

Department of Mineral Resources spokeswoman Alison Ritter says that the blowout began Wednesday afternoon at a well operated by a company called Slawson about nine miles west of Parshall.

A well control team, department inspectors and other officials were working at the scene Thursday.

Ritter says from what she's been told, the lake has not been compromised. Ritter says the oil well is on confidential status so she could not disclose the cause of the blowout or the amount of oil spilled. She says the Lake Sakakawea Spill Response Team has been notified.
