Puppy Scam

Posted: Updated:

Internet scams happen in many ways, but for a Jamestown family, it's going to affect their Christmas. Marlene Partlow bought a puppy online, but instead of getting a new family pet, she got scammed.

"I did an online search for a teacup Chihuahua." Marlene says. After finding a site with a puppy her and her family fell in love with, she started talking to the seller. "And I made a phone call and had a phone conversation with this lady." she continues. Details were planned out for the puppy to arrive at the airport, but before paying some red flags started to come up.

Marlene says, "She said she couldn't get her PayPal to work, and at first I was a little concerned with that, and I told her I wasn't going to Western Union anything." But after a bit it was fixed, so Marlene made the $350 purchase, but when she got to the airport, nothing was there.

"There was a lady that worked at the airport and a lady that was boarding her flight, and I just bursted into tears, and they were both just I'm so sorry." Marlene says. And thinking back she took all the precautions she could. "She had a Face book, she had a website, everything seemed to check out. She had ads on several sites." Marlene says.

But with no puppy and short $350, now her granddaughter Maddie won't have a new puppy to play with for Christmas. "I researched the name, I researched her email address, her phone number you know, now I've got her tagged and putting her name out there." she says.

Marlene warns if you find multiple sites with the same pictures and phone numbers, it could be an easy way to spot a scammer. Also buying locally and in person, could protect your family from getting scammed.

The site Marlene made the purchase on was Oodle, and today they responded to her saying they removed the scammers listings, but she can easily re-register with a new email address.
