Devils Lake in line for Walmart Supercenter

Posted: Updated:

The city of Devils Lake is planning a major annexation east of the present city limits that likely will include a Walmart Supercenter and other stores within two years.

Walmart has a purchase agreement with a property owner for about 16.5 acres of land. City Engineer Mike Grafsgaard says a zoning change and annexation should be completed by mid-January, with necessary infrastructure work beginning in the spring.

Grafsgaard says the store likely would not open until 2014. Mayor Dick Johnson says some developers have expressed interest in building strip malls near the new Walmart.

The Devils Lake Journal reports that the City Commission plans a public hearing on the annexation.
