Need for Volunteer Firefighters Grows in ND

Posted: Updated:

You might be shocked to hear that this is not Brittany Ragan's or Tom Clark's full time job, because when the call comes in, you will always find the two dressed to do battle alongside other West Fargo firefighters.

West Fargo police chief Roy Schatschneider says they're lucky to have a number of volunteers at the department, because many rural departments in the area are much less fortunate.

Across the nation, 75% of firefighters are volunteers, and there are only four full-time fire departments in North Dakota, which means that many other departments are in constant need of people who will take the time to volunteer.

Besides the obvious benefit to the community, volunteers say it's a rush you can't get anywhere else. "It's very fulfilling when you leave and realize you're the best part of a bad day for someone," Tom Clark explains.

Because the need for volunteers is so great, there are now commercials running -- thanks to a grant -- in hopes of recruiting more firefighters.
